Repertoire

What is a repertoire?

A repertoire is a collection of songs that your church sings together. Doxology is designed to help you manage your repertoire and find resources to facilitate your Sunday worship. Coming soon, Doxology will also offer guidance to help you grow and adapt your repertoire over time and plan your weekly services.

What can I do with my repertoire?

Your repertoire is an easy way to access the songs you are mostly likely to use on Sunday.

Maintaining a repertoire on Doxology also unlocks a helpful feature with our AI assistant. Instead of searching through every song in our catalog (let’s face it, no one sings all of them), you can toggle on Search just my repertoire to get suggestions specific to you.

How to create your repertoire

There are two main ways to add songs to your repertoire:

  1. From any song page, add that song to your repertoire by clicking the Add to my repertoire button.
  2. From a hymnal page, you can add individual songs to your repertoire or select all songs your church sings and add them to your repertoire in bulk.

How to view and manage your repertoire

From any page, click Account > My Repertoire in the top right.

From there, you can view and remove songs from your repertoire.

How many songs should I have in my repertoire?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. It depends on your church’s size, style, and preferences. Most churches have between 50–200 songs in their repertoire. So don’t stress about the fact that your hymnal might have over 500 songs—it was published to appeal to a broad range of congregations and there is no expectation that any one church will (or can) sing every song in their hymnal.

Factors to consider include how frequently your church meets (just once on Sunday, or multiple times a week) and how musical your church is. If your repertoire is too small, you may find yourself repeating songs in worship too frequently and deprive your church of musical variety. If you repertoire is too large, you may find that people struggle to learn them well and too much time passes in between instances of singing a given song.

We think a good rule of thumb that works for many churches is...

So, if your church meets once a week on Sunday and tends to sing ~5 songs in a typical service, you might aim for a repertoire of ~75–100 songs.

If your church has multiple Sunday services and/or a midweek service, and you tend to sing more than the average church, you might be able to have a congregational repertoire of over 200 songs.

The key is to find a balance that works for your church. Stay connected with your congregation and continually gauge how well they’re singing and what capacity they have for learning new songs.
